Why does my dog need a consultation and temperament evaluation?
At Mainstay, it’s important that we understand the mechanics of your canine companions’ physical, emotional, and educational needs. That’s why we’ve taken the extra step of scheduling a consultation with our Dog Training Specialist Lead as the first step in booking any boarding, daycare, grooming, or training services. This will help us gauge exactly what your pet(s) need(s), understand your overall caregiving and training goals, and establish an awesome caregiving program tailored to your pup(s)’ needs.
We believe that the best way to ensure your pet(s)’ happiness and well-being while they are staying with us is to have a clear understanding of their individual needs and preferences. By scheduling a consultation with our Dog Training Specialist Lead, we will be able to ask you a series of questions about your pet(s)’ behavior, temperament, and training history. We will also observe your pet(s) interacting with you and other people and animals. This information will help us to develop a personalized caregiving program that is tailored to your pup(s)’ specific needs.
We are committed to providing the best possible care for all of our canine guests, and we believe that this consultation is an essential step in ensuring that your pet(s) have a safe, happy, and enjoyable stay with us.
What's included in the consultation and temperament evaluation?
Mainstay Resort’s consultation consists of two parts:
Part 1: A 30-minute meeting with the Dog Training Specialist to discuss your canine companion’s social, behavioral, and medical background.
Part 2: A 30-minute temperament evaluation conducted by the Dog Training Specialist that covers the following topics:
- Human introductions
- Body handling
- Frustration tolerance
- Stress, sensitivity and recovery
- Environmental sensitivity
- Resource guarding
- Overall socialization
If you are interested in our canine group activity experience, our team of dog training apprentices will oversee an introduction of your dog to the daycare plus experience. Any dogs eligible for group play will have the opportunity to stay from the beginning of the consultation for a 3-hour period without being charged an additional daycare fee.
Here is a breakdown of the consultation process:
- 0-30 minutes: Meet with the Dog Training Specialist to discuss your canine companion’s social, behavioral, and medical background.
- 30-60 minutes: The Dog Training Specialist conducts a temperament evaluation.
- 60-90 minutes: If you are interested in the canine group activity experience, your dog will be introduced to the daycare plus experience.

What training does the Dog Training Apprentice team have?
Mainstay Resort is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to each of our guests, which begins with our carefully selected team of compassionate Training Apprentices. Before hands-on training can even begin, the Training Apprentices go through a rigorous course of virtual training covering the fundamentals of topics such as canine behavior, body language, and handling. Once virtual training is complete, the Apprentices are then under the supervision of our experienced Dog Training Specialist to ensure that they are not only comfortable with the duties of being a Dog Training Apprentice, but also fully equipped with the tools and knowledge for success every day.
